I had a day dream the other day, and it was so vivid it got me really thinking. I saw a floating rainforest, a huge artificial island in the ocean populated with all the rarest trees and animal species, and there were many of them, each one in a part of the world that had the correct environment.
I then did a websearch and discovered that it was indeed a possibility, as it has happened in nature. In the image above we see and old ship which has become the setting for a small forest. Populated by seeds coming from nearby land trees, this process could be done by us on huge platforms using specific seeds and saplings that we wish to preserve. Animals and birds can be brought in, insects, soil with the correct micro-life, everything could be done to ensure the habitat was best. Then, once they had been planted, secured in areas of ocean, a huge forest could be grown permanently. A combined global effort could see millions of acres sprouting up. With no direct road or rail to the trees, logging would be difficult, poaching and hunting would also be difficult. Security would of course be needed. Perhaps revenue could be made by paid research, field trips, tourism and even the sale of natural products grown like fruit, flowers and seeds, if harvested responsibly.
I accept that writing down a day dream may seem a little strange, but if you research me, I am also a fantasy fiction author, and this very concept is almost certainly going to appear in a future story. I would love to see it appear on Earth, right now.
