♄ (Saturn)
Self-released

Darkwave black metal fusion from Spain - the independent and sole musicianship of Emesis, occultist, artist, and general culture anti-hero.

Tapping into that sickly feeling when presented with the impossibly complex and unknown, the veil between humanity and deity, shedding light moment by moment through sheer suffering of mind, the experimental hardcore and synths dirge their way like rusty old ploughs ripping through the tear soaked muddy fields of the witching hour.

Drawing upon the inner and outer metaphysical mysteries, and their symbols, Saturn is an album which attempts to express that very milk of human connectivity to beyond. We feel it, some of us more than the rest, and when it happens, we are forced to produce something ground breaking, earth shattering, or sky scorching. I'd say this album does a good job at reaching for all three of those goals.

The nasty vocal delivery that black metal is famous for is toned down for darkwave, with a spattering of effect and a lower mix, the vox section becomes a rhythmic pulse rather than a leading accompaniment which grants the guitars and drums a whole new stage. Skilled notation and melody work thrust the sound into the realms of Immortal and other 90s nostalgia, a tinny and half baked compression lends itself to Burzum and that all too popular album of his before all the bad things happened.

Retro garnish straight from some of the early Mortiis albums can be heard in the sections between the drama, and in this slightly evolved way, the problems I had with the metaless music from back then, dressed up like some kind of evil magic, but sounded more like something from FF7, this actually takes a swing for the better. Now it's got a frame of something with hard core and sharp edges, this playful epic scenery of sound actually helps the album move along. What it lacks in diversity of rock, it gains in guts and ability to tell a story of sound.
