A Solar System Poem

By Rowan Blair Colver

Bountiful light in a circle of night,

Centred on the furious fusion,

And might of a star which spins,

Different speeds of equatorial seas,

And polar extremities,

Each hot, scorching, with enormous gravity,

The Sun brings balance to it all.

A messenger god and barren cratered world,

Synchronous in orbit so both hot and cold,

Perpetual sunset in a black gasless sky,

Nothing can survive in this tortured divide,

Desolate, deserted,

Visible on occasion yet tiny, obscured by light,

Mercury gallantly sits first in line.

Orange and pink with wisps that peruse,

A love of the artisan, the painter and the muse,

Rich in noxious gasses and thick with CO2,

Raging heat like the oven for clay,

Rivers of liquid rock creep and spray,

Venus spins gently, our twin and proud,

A kiln of rock crushed by the clouds.

Blue, green, yellow and white,

Every inch a spectacle delight,

A gorgeous globe with people and love,

Emotional stories and more than enough,

A wonder, a sight, some gracious gift,

Eternally our Earth, protected by perfection,

In the cosmic back garden of time.

The warrior, the red, a dry dusty bed,

Now touched by human thought,

Perhaps footprints to follow from an astronaut,

In the not so long of time,

With water and potential for life,

Icecaps like Earth but made of dry ice,

The aqueduct frozen, sleeping Mars stirs.

Jovial, fatted, the eye of the storm,

Balancing, shielding, protecting us all,

Just shy of collapse the gravity holds,

A gaseous giant, planet behold!

Ochre and brown, red and rust,

An small rocky core coated in crust,

Jupiter enormous, visible from alien worlds.

Saturn sings loud with beautiful rings,

Proud and glistening, faceted with ice,

A yellow orange jewel hangs in the night,

When night closes in and the twinkling things show,

Distant yet close we see a faint glow,

Creature of gas and of spectacular flow,

Decorated delicately with crowns in a row.

Uranus the green and often unseen,

A cold and active landscape like cream,

A giant of vapours held tight in a ball,

With curious polarity as if not standing up tall,

So far away and unattached to our lives.

Sometimes it swaps order and shifts in the line,

An extra layer of space in this doubling of sky,

Finally although not always so,

A blue and ocean coloured place spins ever slow.

Again so huge and incomparable to us,

This final planet is frigid and still,

A patient place that glides in a dream,

If it can, wishes or will,

Neptune dreams forever of the sea.
